Father’s Day History

Father's Day has a rich history that dates back to the early 20th century. It was first celebrated in the United States on June 19, 1910, thanks to the efforts of Sonora Smart Dodd, who wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran and single parent of six children. Over the years, the celebration has spread worldwide, each country adding its unique traditions and customs.

Father’s Day in Japan

Like many other countries, Father's Day in Japan is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. It is known as "Chichi no Hi" in Japanese. Today, children express gratitude and love for their fathers through gestures and activities.

Gifts are a joint celebration, with traditional presents including neckties, clothing, and alcoholic beverages, mainly sake or beer. Homemade crafts and cards are also popular, especially among younger children. Some families may prepare a special meal or take their fathers out to dine at their favourite restaurant.

In addition to gifts and meals, Japanese families often spend quality time together, perhaps by engaging in a shared hobby or enjoying a leisurely outing. This emphasis on togetherness reflects the cultural value placed on family bonds and respect for parents in Japan. Like many other countries, Father's Day in Japan is celebrated on the third Sunday of June.
